HOW AIR CONDITIONERS WORK.

In principle, air conditioning is transporting air from one location to another and releasing it. Air conditioners that cool air absorb heat from the ambient air, transport it through the condenser and refrigerant cycle and then release it.

This is how air conditioning works

The Physics of TOSHIBA Air Conditioners Explained

Comfort parameters
Comfort parameters

In principle, every air conditioning system is a cooling device like the refrigerator in our kitchen. When the interior space can not only be cooled, but also heated, then we're talking about a heat pump. All TOSHIBA systems are also heat pumps.

These systems are perfectly designed to capture the heat in a room and convey it outdoors – conversely, the heat is captured from the ambient air in heating operation to heat the room to a comfortable temperature. With an air/water heat pump, we are not heating the room air, but rather are preparing hot water for heating & process water.

Climate control, however, is somewhat more complex than cooling: here you are dealing with one's feeling of well-being and one's health – and in the commercial sector, the preservation of the efficiency of employees. When we talk about climate control, the humidity is also very important along with a comfortable room temperature – the graphic shows the "comfort range" with the ratio of temperature and humidity that feels comfortable.

The heart of the system – an intelligently controlled rotary compressor – conveys the refrigerant in various aggregate states where it currently needs to be to fulfill its task for heat absorption (cooling) or heat output (heating):

In cooling operation, liquid refrigerant evaporates via an electronically controlled PMV valve – the heat exchanger (evaporator) in the indoor unit becomes cold, the fan provides air circulation. The high-quality systems from TOSHIBA ensure that the air circulation is quiet without an unpleasant draft.

The evaporated, now gaseous refrigerant is drawn into the outdoor unit by the compressor to bring it back to a high pressure and temperature level. The fan on the heat exchanger (condenser) cools off the gas with the help of the ambient air; the cycle then starts all over again. The outdoor unit itself is an excellent example of the high quality of Toshiba's components and workmanship: the low-vibration and quiet operation of the fan & compressor protects the environment against noise and actively helps to maintain good relations with the neighbors – regardless of whether or not the compact units are installed on a balcony, terrace, or outside wall.

With regards to installation: an air conditioning system merely requires small wall ducts for both refrigerant pipes (made out of a special copper) as well as a power supply and a control line. Your highly trained TOSHIBA sales partner will help you find an installation solution that is visually unobtrusive for any situation.

Energy efficiency

The overall quality and performance of an air conditioner (aside from its convenience functions) can be seen mainly in the energy efficiency level: the more heat energy or cooling power (in kW) that can be generated from one kilowatt hour (kWh) of electricity, the higher the quality of the system. You can find more information on efficiency values in the ErP Directive section.
