All TOSHIBA's main components have always been developed and manufactured in house. The robust single or twin-rotary compressors in all units run exclusively on inverter technology. This means that, thanks to the electronic speed regulation of the compressor, only as much power as is actually needed at a given time is produced. This saves energy, as the unit works in the partial load range the majority of the time – for a reasonably sized air conditioner, this is at least 80% to 90% of the operating time. In addition to energy savings (and therefore cost savings), inverter technology also offers advantages in terms of comfort: temperature fluctuations are prevented, so you can enjoy a pleasant indoor climate at all times.
In order to achieve the optimum ratio of absorbed energy to released energy with a wide range of requirements, TOSHIBA's electronic controls can be operated in two modes: PAM (pulse amplitude modulation) and PWM (pulse width modulation). When subject to high loads the controls work in PAM mode, and when subject to low loads the inverter switches to PWM mode. Only TOSHIBA's electronic controls are equipped with these two modes, which permit huge energy savings.
The compressor drive is fitted with a motor with adjustable speeds. The use of permanent magnets for the poles of DC motors has now become the norm. The purpose of the speed control is to determine the required compressor speed depending on the load.
TOSHIBA uses twin-rotary compressors in the majority of its units, which consist of two rotary pistons moving in the opposite direction. This increases mechanical stability and minimizes vibration. The compressor speed can be easily controlled and this requires little power. Another significant advantage of the compressor is its low noise level.
